About Russian Visas
All non-Russians (except citizens of some former Soviet republics) entering Russia require a Russian visa . In order to receive a Russian visa, it is first necessary to receive a Russian visa invitation from a Russian citizen or a Russian company, which is then taken or sent by express post to a Russian consulate where the actual Russian visa will issued. Within three working days of a foreigner's arrival in Russia, the Russian visa needs to be registered. Russian visa registration is a serious issue and if you do not register your visa you may have problems leaving the country.

Prices for processing Russian visas vary according to the applicant's citizenship and the Russian consulate applied to. The prices for US nationals to receive Russian visas are quite high. There are six types of Russian visas, but most applicants receive one of three types:

Russian Tourist Visas
Russian tourist visas are best for stays in Russia under 30 days. It is illegal for a Russian hotel to provide you with an invitation if you are not going to stay there but this law is broken more often than it is followed. Many Russian visa agencies can issue you a Russian visa invitation and then assist you with having the visa registered without a night booked in a hotel, and many hotels will give you an invitation and register it even if you're only staying with them for part of your trip. Your original passport with at least 2 blank visa-designated pages (passport must be valid for at least 6 months after intended departure date from Russia). Order tourist visa invitation.

Russian Business Visas
Russian business visas are much more flexible than Russian tourist visas and do not necessarily have to be used for business people - many tourists opt for this type of visa if they are staying for extended periods of time in the country as do many independent travelers to Russia. To receive a Russian business visa, the applicant requires an invitation from a Russian company, which can usually be arranged through a Russian visa agency. Order business visa invitation.

Russian Student Visas
Russian Student visas are very flexible, lengthy, and entitle applicants to receive Russian prices for the theater, other events, and a host of other things. The only problem is that the applicant has to be enrolled in a Russian educational institute. If you are planning to enroll in a Russian university, the school administration can help you arrange this type of visa.

Other Russian Visas
Other types of visas include Transit Visas and Diplomatic Visas and On the Spot Visas. Transit visas can be an inexpensive choice for travelers headed for China or Central Asia, but it is often difficult to make it in and out of Russia in your allotted window of time. On-the-Spot Visas are quite rare, not universally available - almost no where actually, and very expensive. Diplomatic visas have a narrow range of applicability.

Russian Immigration Cards
Russian Immigration cards are cards issued to foreigners on their arrival to Russia. Foreigners are supposed to fill them out and have them stamped on entry into the country. Russian visa registration is conducted with the use of the immigration card - the visa registration usually being stamped on the back of the card.  Officials have repeatedly stated that the aim of the law is to track illegal migrants from other countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States, whose citizens can travel to Russia without visas. Citizens of Belarus, which has a union agreement with Russia, are not required to obtain cards.
The card has two identical sections. The holder's name, age, sex and purpose of stay are recorded on both parts; one half stays at the point of issue, and the other is given up when the holder leaves the country.
The immigration card should be carried at all times with your passport.  Russian Immigration cards must be filled out upon entry into Russia.

Medical Insurance
Medical insurance is required for the citizens of Israel and Finland and Estonia, as well as for the citizens of Schengen Agreement Member States (Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain). Medical insurance is not required for US citizens.

Russian Visas for Children
Children require separate visas if they travel on their own passports. Non-traveling parents must confirm in an affidavit their consent for their children's travel. If the child's surname differs from that of his (her) parents, a copy of the child's birth certificate must be enclosed.

It is best to contact the Russian Consulate directly if you have questions regarding which particular documents they need to issue Russian visas

Most foreigners traveling to Russia require Russian visas. Please read the information above to learn more
